Press release – Steel overcapacity: MEPs approve new measures to protect EU steel market

MEPs have approved new measures to protect the EU steel market by implementing lower import quotas and increased customs duties. These measures are in line with World Trade Organisation rules and aim to safeguard the EU steel industry from the negative impacts of global steel overcapacity. The new regulation also focuses on improving traceability of steel goods and will come into force on 1 July 2026. Ukraine's situation and defense capabilities are taken into account, and there is a clear focus on fair competition and supporting the competitiveness of the EU steel industry.
