Press release – Proxy voting rights for female MEPs before and after giving birth

MEPs proposed to amend the EU Electoral Act to grant proxy voting rights to female MEPs three months before due date and six months after childbirth, aiming to enhance gender equality and encourage mothers' participation in political life. The Legislative proposal was adopted by the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, with a strong vote in favor. The reform seeks to enable MEPs to fulfill their mandates while balancing health and family responsibilities. The proposal will now go to the Council for approval and requires support from more than half of MEPs to come into effect. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of promoting gender equality, inclusivity, and work-life balance in politics.
