Press release – New rules for a more sustainable EU automotive sector

The EU has introduced new circularity rules for the automotive sector, covering a vehicle's lifecycle from design to end-of-life treatment. Key points include designing new vehicles for easy dismantling, increasing use of recycled materials, stricter end-of-life management measures, and banning the export of non-roadworthy vehicles. The rules aim to promote a transition to a circular economy, improve resource security, and protect the environment. The agreement was adopted with strong support in Parliament and awaits formal approval by the Council before coming into force in 24 months.
