Press release – Mercosur: Parliament approves safeguard clauses to protect EU agriculture

The European Parliament approved additional safeguards to protect the EU's agriculture sector from potential harm due to liberalization with Mercosur countries. The new regulation enables the EU to temporarily suspend tariff preferences for agricultural imports if they negatively impact EU producers. The safeguards include monitoring and reporting mechanisms, along with criteria for triggering protective measures. Once adopted by the Council, the regulation will apply when the Mercosur Interim Trade Agreement is in effect.
