Press release – EU must show leadership in achieving peace in Ukraine

The text emphasizes the need for the EU to take a leading role in promoting peace in Ukraine, supporting the idea that any sustainable peace must begin with an effective ceasefire. The European Parliament urges the EU to work closely with the US and other partners to ensure negotiations for a lasting peace adhere to international law principles. MEPs reject the recognition of any Ukrainian territory as Russian, stressing that Ukraine's sovereignty and freedom to choose alliances should be respected. Additionally, the resolution calls for compensation for damages caused by Russia in Ukraine, proposing a 'reparations loan' funded by frozen Russian assets. If Russia fails to engage in serious peace talks, MEPs advocate for imposing further sanctions.
