Press release – Deal reached on Union Customs Code reform

The European Parliament and Council have agreed on a significant reform of the EU Customs Code to address e-commerce challenges, safety concerns, and enhance efficiency. The reform introduces a new handling fee for goods entering the EU directly from non-EU countries for EU consumers. E-commerce platforms are to be treated as importers, incentivizing bulk shipments and cooperation with customs authorities. Companies that repeatedly ignore EU rules may face fines and status revocations. Procedures are simplified for compliant import-export companies in exchange for transparency. A new EU Customs Authority in Lille will manage a customs data hub for more effective and efficient customs operations.
