Press release – Child sexual abuse online: voluntary detection measures will not be extended

The European Parliament voted against extending voluntary measures for service providers to detect child sexual abuse online by not prolonging an interim derogation from e-Privacy rules. Despite efforts to negotiate a long-term legal framework, no agreement was reached with the Council, and the interim regulation will expire after 3 April 2026. Parliament aimed to continue temporary measures for a shorter period and with a narrower scope, but these efforts did not succeed. Talks on a permanent law have been ongoing since Council adopted its position in November 2025.
