Press release – Asylum policy: deal on first-ever EU list of safe countries of origin

EU negotiators reached a political agreement to establish an EU list of safe countries of origin, including Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, Kosovo, India, Morocco, and Tunisia. Asylum requests from these countries will be fast-tracked, but individuals can challenge this designation. Candidate countries will also be presumed safe unless certain exceptions apply. The EU can suspend or expand the list, and member states may designate additional safe countries nationally. The European Court of Justice can review designations, and certain provisions can be applied before full implementation in 2026. The goal is to streamline asylum processes and better manage migration flows.
