Press release – Asylum: EP and Council reach a deal to update safe third country rules

The European Parliament and Council have reached a deal to update safe third country rules, allowing member states to declare asylum applications inadmissible for applicants with connections to a third country, who transit through it, or under agreements with that country. Unaccompanied minors are exempt. The goal is to streamline asylum and return procedures, ensuring protection is granted where needed while increasing effectiveness. This agreement is pending formal adoption by Parliament and Council.
