Press release – Child sexual abuse online: support for extending voluntary rules until August 2027

The European Parliament has voted to extend voluntary rules for detecting child sexual abuse material online until August 2027 to allow time to establish a permanent legal framework. The measures should be proportionate and limited, only targeting identified or flagged material and suspicious users. End-to-end encryption must be preserved. Negotiations with the Council on the extension are next, with the aim to ensure sustainable protection for children while upholding fundamental rights.
