Press release – EU climate law: a 2040 emissions reduction target of 90% for the EU

The European Parliament has approved a revised EU Climate Law that includes a 2040 emissions reduction target of 90% compared to 1990 levels. This aims to achieve a climate neutral EU by 2050. The law provides flexibility for member states in meeting targets, allowing for international carbon credits from 2036 onwards and including provisions for domestic carbon removals. The review of progress towards the target every two years may lead to adjustments to strengthen the framework if needed. The law will come into force once endorsed by the Council.
