EU negotiators have reached a provisional agreement on new genomic techniques (NGTs) focusing on sustainability, climate resilience, and fewer pesticides in farming. The rules differentiate between NGT1 and NGT2 plants, with NGT1 plants having fewer regulatory requirements. Intellectual property rights are allowed for NGTs, with safeguards for affordability and farmers' rights. Traceability and labeling guidelines are set, with an opt-out provision for member states. NGTs are not allowed in organic production. The agreement aims to enhance the green transition in farming while ensuring fair access for farmers.
