Press release – MEPs support review of criteria to declare a third country safe for asylum applicants

MEPs support changes to Asylum Law regarding criteria for declaring third countries safe for asylum applicants. New rules include requiring a connection between the applicant and the third country, transit through a third country offering protection, or a formal agreement. Negotiations on agreements or arrangements with third countries should be known to MEPs. Automatic appeals for asylum application inadmissibility under safe third country rules will not grant automatic stay in the EU. The goal is to streamline asylum procedures for faster and clearer decisions.
