In 1975 werd Suriname onafhankelijk van Nederland, leading to increased migration to the Netherlands. By 2024, 256,000 Surinamese people had emigrated to the Netherlands. Currently, 181,000 Surinamese-born individuals reside in the Netherlands, mainly older women. Migration peaked in 1975 and declined after 1980. The data shows a higher proportion of women in the Surinamese-born population in the Netherlands. Almere has the highest percentage of residents of Surinamese origin. Surinamese women are more likely to head single-parent households.
