Press release – EU 2040 climate target: MEPs want 90% emissions reduction in EU climate law

The European Parliament aims for a 90% reduction in emissions by 2040, in line with the EU's goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. The Parliament supports flexibility for member states to meet targets, including the use of international carbon credits and domestic carbon removals. They also endorse postponing the implementation of the EU emissions trading system ETS2 to 2028. Progress towards targets will be reviewed every two years, with adjustments made if necessary to ensure competitiveness and meet climate goals. The legislation was approved by Parliament, initiating negotiations with member states for final approval.
