Press release – EU 2040 climate target: MEPs seek 90% emissions reduction

MEPs are pushing for a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 compared to 1990 levels to achieve a climate-neutral EU by 2050. They seek increased flexibility in meeting targets and support international carbon credits for emission reductions. The review of progress every two years will guide potential adjustments to the 2040 target. The EU Climate Law aims to strengthen competitiveness while ensuring climate goals are met. Plenary will vote on Parliament's position on 13 November, initiating negotiations with member states.
